From Mixing to Drying: Three Key Processes Safeguarding Fertilizer Quality

In the production chain of organic and compound fertilizers, three processes are often underestimated; while they are not responsible for granulation or ingredient proportioning, they determine whether the final product is easy or difficult for farmers to use. The horizontal fertilizer mixer, twin-screw compost turner, and bio-organic fertilizer dryer stand at these three critical stages, each safeguarding a specific dimension of quality.

The horizontal fertilizer mixer safeguards "homogeneity." Its working principle is straightforward: a horizontal cylinder houses a double-layer ribbon agitator with counter-rotating spirals. The outer ribbon pushes material from the ends toward the center, while the inner ribbon pushes it from the center toward the ends, creating a reciprocating convective cycle. With a main shaft speed typically kept below 45 revolutions per minute, shear forces remain low, keeping the breakage rate of brittle granules under 5%. Regarding mixing uniformity, the batch coefficient of variation is usually controlled below 5%, and uniformity exceeds 97%; effective mixing is achieved even when density differences between materials are as high as tenfold.


The twin-screw compost turner safeguards "oxygen supply." Organic fertilizer fermentation is essentially a feast for aerobic microorganisms, which require oxygen to decompose organic matter. If the compost pile becomes oxygen-deprived, anaerobic bacteria take over, producing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia; consequently, the pile temperature fails to rise sufficiently, leaving insect eggs and pathogens alive. The twin-screw compost turner addresses this by using two parallel, counter-rotating screw shafts spinning at differential speeds (10–15 rpm). This action forcibly breaks up the compacted bottom layer and tosses it into the air while simultaneously mixing in the drier surface material, achieving a complete three-dimensional turnover of the material in the trough within minutes. Oxygen concentration at the bottom of the trough can be raised from under 2% to between 8% and 15%, shortening the fermentation cycle by 5 to 7 days compared to single-shaft turning.

The bio-organic fertilizer dryer safeguards "stability." The core value of bio-organic fertilizer lies in the live, functional microorganisms it contains—organisms that are extremely sensitive to temperature. If the temperature is not properly controlled during the drying stage, a large number of these microbes will lose their viability, effectively turning the product into ordinary organic matter. Industry experience dictates that the drying temperature must be strictly maintained between 60°C and 80°C; this range allows for the evaporation of excess moisture without causing mass microbial die-off.

These three processes typically follow a specific sequence on a complete organic fertilizer production line: a mixer blends raw materials from various sources; a windrow turner supplies continuous oxygen to the microorganisms within the fermentation tank; and a dryer finalizes the shape of the granules while preserving their biological activity. Each piece of equipment addresses a specific requirement—mixing ensures uniformity, turning ensures oxygenation, and drying ensures microbial viability—yet the absence of any single step compromises the fertilizer's quality in some respect. Ultimately, the essence of fertilizer production lies in executing every detail to perfection across these seemingly routine processes.
